Default Amazing step in MMO history (by fans)

btw I thought this deserved a spot on the most looked at forum, even though it has nothing to do with GW it is really cool.

"The realization of a dream...

Some of you don’t know and some of you do know but UO Gamers started as a dream back in 1999. Back then it was a little different crew, and a completely different emulator but the dream has stayed the same. Be the biggest, most enjoyable player run shard on the face of the planet and provide players what they want in Ultima Online.

Tonight that dream has been realized, through the hard work of many people and players.

Tonight the RunUO team has accomplished something I sincerely believe that not even EA Games has accomplished. EA Games maintains a farm of servers to power a single shard. They break the world apart into separate zones, thus providing us “shard lines”. The RunUO Team however has built a software package that rivals the one they have written. Tonight we had 7891 users logged into UO Gamers: Hybrid on a single machine in a single facet. The shard was packed beyond belief and with over five million items, almost two hundred thousand mobiles and sixty-five thousand accounts the server was saving in less than fifteen seconds.

All of this was made possible by a few people and tonight I would like to give them credit. First of all credit goes out to Origin Systems for giving us all this game that we so dearly love and cherish that we emulate it to hold onto what we had. Second I would like to thank EA Games for keeping the game alive and allowing the UO “emulation” community to co-exist peacefully unlike Blizzard who stomps out creativity by suing people that try to emulate their software. Last but not least I would like to thank the two guys who did our sixty-four bit conversion, Mark and Krrios.

Without the conversion to sixty-four bit we would not have been able to accomplish what we have tonight and it took a lot of hard work and a lot perseverance to get it right. Of course you guys probably thought I was going to end the thanks there but you’re wrong. I want to thank each and every one of you that helped us tonight. We "

It's not related to GW. But I have to say, I've been playing UO for years and have played both OSI (the company that made UO - it's now run by EA Games) servers and free servers - namely UOGamers. It's amazing what UOGamers has done and just shows what people can do if they work on it.

I've played on UOGamers before.

But primarily I played The Darkside (TDS) and I forgot the name of the other shard, Deceit, Deception, Obsidian, something like that. I'd recognize the name if I saw ti though.

It was basically old school PvP with stealing in towns and everything. It ran on RunUO instead of Sphere.

Something I wish TDS had done but, whatever, it's still my favorite (don't play it any more though, all I have are the memories of how it used to be, it's ruined now IMO, not at all what it used to be).


Anyways that is truly awesome. Wonder if I should whip out the old UO CDs.

Mine are hopelessly out of date though. I downloaded (legally, it was an offer by OSI/EA themselves) the last update (forgot what it was called, not Samurai Empire, the one before that but after Blackthorn's Revenge).

Age of Shadows. And UO is still pretty fun if you can get a few friends who play.

Was the server run completely by individuals and not a company, and funded completely by donations? (seriously a question - I don't know )

Plus they had big $$ backing it up. These guys had pocket change and donations.

Big difference.

Yeah i've been waiting for emulated guildwars for a long, long time. Still waiting unfortunately. Although I'd imagine with the low bandwidth and stuff, Each guild would have thier own server to host matches on, rather than one big server everyone would play on.

Not really, Eve started development with 4 guys in Iceland. RunUO had a big UO community behind it before it even started. I still think it's an impressive achievement none the less, and deserves to be celebrated.

wow congrats dude. I play a runuo server (Fractured Shard) and despite it only having around 20 people on it (on a good night) and... i dont know, can't remmeber the figures, around a couple hundred mobiles and a couple hundred mobiles, it usually takes around 25 seconds to save. And once we had some horrible 3.43 length save!

is your server on a dedicated server to uo? Coz although I don't know the specs of our admins computer, i know that its just on his own pc (which fair enough, not many people use but it still has plenty of extra stuff on it which will slow the server down)
